Death Online – Issues of Online Accounts and Passwords after Death
Have you considered what will happen to all your online accounts especially your banking accounts and social networking accounts?
The Law Society has recently produced guidance advising people to keep an up to date list of online accounts so that their Executors are aware of these accounts and able to deal with them after your death. It is important, however, that care is taken in dealing with these assets after death. Anyone using your passwords and pins after your death could be committing a criminal offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. Their advice is that it is sufficient to leave a list on online account and this will enable the Executors to access and close down all your accounts.
At Parkes Wilshire Johnson we are happy to keep a copy of any list of online accounts in strict confidence and in secure fire-proof storage.
